Levels 1-4 curriculum unit synopsis

The students themselves will help determine the areas of study for our Unit Objectives. Below is an example of a previous year's studies.

Level 1 Unit Objectives

Unit 1: Growth & Well-Being

In this unit students will explore what growth is and what it means to them.  We will learn about multiple examples of growth, starting with ourselves: How do humans grow and what is needed for us to grow/survive? What elements are needed for us to thrive?  We will discuss what it takes to keep us healthy and strong via nutrition and good hygiene practices. For example: hand washing, teeth brushing, flossing,  eating healthy natural foods and  limiting processed artificial foods.  We will also learn about the growth cycle of plants with a hands-on class project---each student will grow their own plant from seed, and “see” for themselves the process of growth via germination to seedling.  We will discuss how plants and us need the same things to thrive: Sunshine, water, proper nutrition, and LOVE.

Unit 2: Austin, TX, U.S.A.

In this unit students will learn about local geography, and learn where Austin, TX. is on the “map” in relation to the rest of the world.  Topics will also include local favorites around town, such as Barton Springs Pool.   We will learn about each other and the history of their families and where other family members might be in the world. A simple Family Tree art project will showcase their research.

Unit 3: Animals & Mammals

In this unit we will discuss the difference between animals and mammals, domestic and wild.  We will identify different species around the world.  Students will then choose either an animal or mammal to study and research for a 3-D model project presentation of their chosen animal/mammal.

Unit 4: World Geography

Students will get a more in-depth introduction to the world’s land masses/continents, and bodies of water (Unit 2 was a brief introduction to the idea of where we are in this world with a general overview).  We will play geography games, create dances, and connect our family’s history during this unit.

Unit 5: Weather & Astronomy

In this unit, the students will explore and discover weather patterns and its connections with the seasons.   We will also explore astronomy and major celestial bodies such as the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars.  “Is their a connection between the Sun, the Moon, Stars, and the Earth?”  We will find out.

Unit 6: World Culture

After learning about world geography from Unit 4, students will now get the chance to learn about the people who live in these far off and exotic places. We will explore world culture through food, art, and dance. One idea is to have an “International Food Day”, where students can bring in a dish/snack to share with the rest of the class. This may even be a dish from their heritage.

Level 2 Unit Objectives

Unit 1 Local Geography

Students will explore where they live and where their school is. Students will research the history of themselves and their family, and the people and places that are important in their lives. We will also learn some of the history and culture of Austin as well as the history of Casa De Luz.

Unit 2 Care of Earth and Human Wellness

Students will discover the many ways we can take take of our planet which include recycling, reusing and reducing. We will explore alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro. We will make the connection between the health of the Earth and the health of our bodies by examining pollution and its effects of our food, air, and water. We will also experiment further with ways to reduce waste by dabbling in vermiculture (worm bins) and other permaculture techniques.

Unit 3 Cultures Around the World

Students will explore and celebrate the cultures they are apart of or that they are interested in. Students will work on a project to represent the culture they pick. This project can be a traditional report but can even be a dance, play, art piece or other expression.

Unit 4 Plants and Animals

We will begin study of the different animal groups, native plants and animals, habitats and different ecosystems. We will identity, collect and observe different plants and animals in their habitat.

Unit 5 South America

This will be our in-depth exploration and celebration of South American Culture and its influence in Texas. Students will have another opportunity to create a project that expresses their interest in some aspect of South American culture.

Unit 6 Exploring Weather and Seasons from Space

We will learn how to recognize weather patterns from the ground and from space, and how the weather patterns effect the seasons. We will have a special guest scientist from NASA talk with us via webcam.
